Composer Audit vs PHP Security Updates: What Each Check Proves

Separate three kinds of evidence

Use three columns in a deployment review: runtime remediation, dependency advisory status and application compatibility. Runtime remediation identifies the installed and serving interpreter build and its supplier's security evidence. Dependency status identifies the application packages being checked against an advisory feed. Compatibility establishes whether the chosen environment satisfies the application's requirements and representative journeys.

These columns can disagree without any tool being broken. Imagine a fictional invoicing application whose dependency audit is clear but whose hosting team has not confirmed the serving PHP fix. The audit result belongs in the dependency column; it cannot complete the runtime column by implication.

Conversely, a newly patched interpreter does not automatically replace packages committed in composer.lock. The release needs an owner for each layer, not one checkbox called “security passed.”

Use Composer's documented commands for their intended purpose

The Composer command reference documents audit for advisory checks, check-platform-reqs for the installed environment's PHP/extension compatibility, and validate for project-file validation. Check your installed Composer's help because available options and advisory-policy behavior can evolve.

A read-only evidence-gathering sequence in a trusted project is:

composer --version
composer validate --strict
composer audit
composer check-platform-reqs

Run these in the intended environment and save the results without leaking private repository credentials. A command running successfully somewhere in CI says little about another environment unless the image/build relationship is established.

Do not use a blind composer update on a live site as an emergency interpreter patch. Dependency resolution and code changes require their own review and regression plan. If a dependency needs updating, create a deliberate change with a reviewed lockfile rather than an unrecorded production mutation.

Understand the platform override before trusting compatibility

Composer's configuration documentation describes config.platform as a way to represent platform packages during resolution. Such a configured target is not an observation of the PHP binary serving the website. The documentation also addresses platform checking and explicit plugin permissions.

Inspect the difference between the declared target and the real deployment. If the project resolves dependencies for one environment and runs them in another, the team needs a validation step in the actual target context. Do not bypass an incompatibility with ignore-platform-reqs and then claim compatibility has been established.

A useful review note records the expected PHP family, required extensions, actual web/runtime evidence and the result of the platform check. It also identifies any exception and its expiry rather than leaving an environment override unexplained in configuration indefinitely.

Treat build-time code execution as its own trust boundary

Composer's plugin documentation explains that plugins extend Composer's behavior. Review which plugins and scripts a build permits, particularly when the input is a pull request or newly introduced package.

Use an isolated, least-privileged build environment and avoid sharing production secrets with untrusted dependency evaluation. Establish who can change composer.json, composer.lock and CI configuration. A dependency update approved only by someone looking at a package name can still change build behavior.

An illustrative code-review checklist asks: which new packages enter the tree, which scripts/plugins can execute, which credentials are available at that stage, and which output artifact reaches production? This checklist is original release-analysis guidance, not a claim that a particular package is malicious.

Tie the build artifact to the running deployment

For an image-based deployment, preserve the reviewed lockfile revision, application image identity and runtime image identity. Verify that the serving replicas use the approved artifact. A new base-image tag existing upstream does not rebuild or redeploy your application automatically.

For managed hosting, maintain the link between the application's release and the provider's PHP confirmation. A shell running Composer may not share the web interpreter. Follow the PHP web-versus-CLI verification guide rather than treating a local platform check as universal server evidence.

Do not execute unknown project scripts against a production database just to see whether a security warning disappears. Keep dependency investigation and live-system changes separated by a normal controlled release boundary.

Include lifecycle work in the remediation plan

The PHP support schedule, checked on 22 October 2026, lists PHP 8.2 security support ending on 31 December 2026. An immediate security fix on that branch and a migration before its support deadline are different tasks. Complete the urgent remediation without losing the longer-term upgrade owner.

Unsupported branches may have vendor-specific arrangements; confirm their exact coverage rather than assuming that a package still being downloadable means it receives comprehensive security maintenance. Compatibility constraints should produce a migration plan, not become a permanent reason to accept an unknown runtime state.

What to put in the final release record

Keep the runtime patch evidence, dependency audit output, platform requirements result, trusted build revision and representative regression results together. Mark the scope honestly: advisory databases cover known reported issues, and a clear result does not prove the absence of every vulnerability.

For the current runtime event, use the PHP security update overview. This article explains how the checks fit together; it does not claim that Composer itself repairs PHP or that FinderPress audited the reader's environment.
